Surfing at Kalihiwai Bay 3

I did say I could watch the surf and surfers for hours.

Lucky for you, I was constrained by time and my wife.

Them rocks look close

Dramatic shot – foolish surfer – so close to those sharp basalt cliffs – what was he thinking?

Dunno – probably enjoying the challenge of the wave he was on.

I shot this with my Canon 7D MkII using an EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L and a 1.4x extender. The focal length equivalent was 560 mm. (Don’t you just love the tech talk)

Because of the extended focal length, the view becomes very compressed. This guy was about 550 yards (480 meters) away from me, across the bay. He probably has 100 yards of surf between him and the rocks.
